March On UK Campus Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
As MLK Day approaches, the University of Kentucky is highlighting his legacy and trying to keep his dream alive.
Thursday would have been MLK’s actual birthday. UK used it as a kick off for MLK events.
Thursday night students marched throughout campus reenacting parts of his speech then explaining what it means and how it relates to today’s current events.
After the march, students moved inside for a discussion on if his dream has been fulfilled and what needs to happen next.
The discussion was part of the monthly Soup and Substance series.
Event organizers said understanding and talking about these things is the first step to equality.
“Recognizing that these things are still happening today, which is unfortunate in a lot of ways, but hoping that having this discussion, making people aware so that one day we can help get closer to eradicating some of these things,” said Rosalyn Robinson with UK’s Martin Luther King Center.
MLK events continue throughout the weekend on campus.
