Partners work to make Louisville greener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Four organizations that have been working for 10 years to make Louisville greener say they are ready to commit to another decade.

The Partnership for a Green City is a collaboration involving Louisville Metro Government, Jefferson County Public Schools, University of Louisville and Jefferson Community and Technical College. Leaders gathered Wednesday to celebrate the anniversary and agree to continue for another 10 years.

Partnership Director Brent Fryrear said in a news release Wednesday that the partners have been able to increase energy efficiency, make buildings and transportation systems greener, adopt environment-friendly purchasing policies and showcase merits of sustainability.

He says for example, the partners reduced total electricity use from 2011 to 2013 by enough to light and heat nearly 9,400 average Louisville homes for a year.
