KSP: Man Crashes, Steals Another One, Hits Cruiser
A Shelbyville man is behind bars, facing a long list of charges after Kentucky State Police said he led troopers on a chase, stole a car at gunpoint and caused a crash.
Police said on Tuesday, a trooper spotted a vehicle on US 60 East that did not stop at a stop sign and tried to pull the driver over.
But instead of stopping, police said the blue 2001 Ford Focus sped up, traveling west in the eastbound lane of traffic then collided with a vehicle traveling eastbound.
The driver of the eastbound car was taken to the hospital.
They said the suspect, Jonathan Curtis, 32, jumped out of the car after the wreck and ran into a local business parking lot where he jumped into a shopper’s car, pointed a gun at the driver and ordered that driver out.
Curtis then placed the stolen car in reverse striking a Kentucky State Police cruiser.
The trooper in the cruiser was not injured but the cruiser was severely damaged.
Shelbyville police officers continued the pursuit and were able to apprehend Curtis off of Hi Point Drive behind Rural King after he struck a concrete barrier and fence, according to police.
Curtis is in the Shelby County Detention Center facing more than a dozen charges.
