Keeneland Sets North American Record With $3M Weanling Sale
It sold the daughter of leading sire Tapit for $3 million.
It was the highest price ever paid for a weanling in North America.
The sale was one of eleven horses that sold for $1 million or more on Wednesday.
Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell said, “It just shows how global our market is and what Central Kentucky can offer the international market…Breeders and consignors know this is where people from around the world come to buy horses, which means Keeneland is able to offer horses with internationally important pedigrees. These are families that are hard to get to. We’re able to market these horses very well.”
The weanling was sold to John and Leslie Malone’s Bridlewood Farm of Florida.
The sale exceeded the previous record price for a weanling sold at public auction in the United States.
The previous record had been set at Keeneland in 2006 when Globe Equine Management Ltd. paid $2.7 million for the Montjeu (IRE) weanling colt Amour Malheureux.
The highest-price horse of the sale was Aloof.
The Group 3-winning daughter of Galileo (IRE), in foal to leading sire War Front, sold for $3.9 million to Mandy Pope’s Florida-based Whisper Hill Farm.
The November Sale ends on Friday, Nov. 14th.
