Kentucky Man Challenges Federal Hate-Crime Law

One of the first people in the United States to be charged under a federal hate crimes law is challenging that law.
The lawyer for 20-year-old Anthony Jenkins filed the challenge on Wednesday according to the Herald-Leader newspaper.
Jenkins and his cousin are accused of kidnapping and assaulting a gay man in Letcher County last year.
Sexual orientation and gender were added under the federal hate crimes law in 2009.
According to the newspaper, Jenkins’ lawyer argues that there is no compelling interest in giving special protection to those who are gay.
