Coroner: Man Shot And Killed In Home Invasion
The coroner said that man is Darnell Bates, 36, of Lexington.
According to the coroner, Bates’ death is being investigated by Lexington detectives as a homicide.
Lexington Police called the incident a burglary.
They said a family member reported waking up to noise coming from the living room of the home on Addie Alley.
According to the family member, they saw Bates wrestling with two masked suspects before shots were fired and Bates was hit.
No one else was injured and Lexington Police said they haven’t arrested any suspects.
The coroner’s report said the incident happened Sunday morning around 4:45 at Bates’ home on Addie Alley.
At Goo Goo car wash, Jacob Neal and William Millen worked with Bates.
To them, he was more than just a coworker.
"He was a real great friend. He was like a brother to me," said Jacob Neal.
Neal and Millen said Bates worked at the car wash for over five years, and just two weeks ago he was promoted to general manager.
"If he was here right now, he’d be out there mowing the grass or we would be sitting here washing cars, smiling, laughing," said Neal.
Neal and Millen set up a jar at the car wash to raise money for the funeral and Bates’ daughter.
Because his friendship, Neal said is something that will always be remembered.
"It really hasn’t settled in that he’s gone. He’ll never be forgotten in my book. I love him to death, one of my best friends," said Neal.
