U of L to increase police presence

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The University of Louisville says it plans to increase the number of police and security officers after seeing an increase in violence over the summer near its campuses.

The Courier-Journal (http://cjky.it/1qF6Vxb ) reports U of L leadership announced on Wednesday that it would hire eight officers to conduct nighttime patrols around its Belknap and Health Sciences Center campuses.

Dean of Students and Acting Vice President for Student Affairs Michael Mardis said the patrols would be focused along Third and Fourth streets near residential housing.

Mardis says student safety "is of the utmost importance" to university leaders.
