Postal Facility In Lexington Scheduled To Be Closed In 2015
That would mean mail from the Lexington-area would be sent to Louisville or Knoxville for processing.
The same Lexington facility was scheduled to be closed in 2011, but was spared a year later, saving 184-jobs.
The Lexington operation is one of 82 facilities nationwide scheduled for closing throughout 2015 that the Postal Service said would save $750 million.
The closings are scheduled to begin in January 2015 and be completed in the fall.
No specific shutdown date was given for the Lexington facility on the Website.
Over the last two years, the Postal Service consolidated 141 other mail processing facilities across the country, which it said saved $865 million and resulted in no layoffs.
The Postal Service said over the last three years, it had lost $26 billion because of a continued decline of First-Class Mail volume, which resulted in reduced revenue.
The USPS also said wage and benefit inflation, increased operating costs, legislative mandates and debt pressures all contributed to the huge financial losses.
The Postal Service receives no taxpayer money.
The USPS gets all of its revenue from the sale of products and services, which continued to decline.
There are other scheduled closings in Kentucky in addition to the Lexington facility. They include Louisville, Paducah and Campton.
