City Wants Community’s Input for Jacobson Park Playground

The Jacobson Park playground in Lexington has been around for more than two decades.

When some parents heard the city was going to tear it down, they were upset.

Many parents said they worry that a replacement playground would likely be designed with so much safety in mind that it wouldn’t inspire creativity.

The city said no designs or even plans are set at this time.

It said it wants to hear all ideas to keep Jacobson Park a destination playground.

The park was built in the early 1990’s and the city said it doesn’t meet current safety codes.

Parks and Recreation said the earliest anything would happen at the park is next spring.

It said no plans or materials have been decided on and said parts of the old, wooden playground could stay.

A public meeting is tentatively planned for early August because the city wants the community’s input in planning the new park.

“We do understand what they’re talking about and I think we can present them with many different opportunities of materials that can recreate that sense of space that will engage children for hours,” said Chris Cooperrider with LFUCG Parks and Recreation.

A Facebook group, Save Jacobson Park Playground, has more than 700 members and an online petition started to save the playground has nearly 2,500 signatures.
