Keeneland Begins Conversion To Dirt Track

Keeneland began the conversion of its main race track from a synthetic Polytrack material to a dirt surface on Monday.

During the next two weeks, 16,000 tons of Polytrack will be removed from the main track as the first step in the renovation process, according to the racetrack.

The Polytrack was a wax-coated surface made out of rubber, sand and fiber, which according to The Jockey Club, was safer than a dirt track.

The Club says Keeneland’s fatality rate had been well below the average for dirt tracks while using the Polytrack surface.

Keeneland officials say they’re making the switch to attract more Triple Crown and Breeders’ Club contenders.

Keeneland says construction should be completed by August 15, and the grounds will remain open to visitors during the track renovation.
