Auburn Transfer QB Joey Gatewood granted immediate eligibility at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, KY (WTVQ) – It took longer than expected, but UK Athletics and former Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood received the news they had been wanting hear. The NCAA granted him immediate eligibility.

Gatewood will likely take over the backup QB role held by former Lexington Catholic QB Beau Allen in Week 1.

While at Auburn, the Florida native played in eight games.

In 2019, he was 5 for 7 for 54 yards passing and two touchdowns.

On the ground, he rushed 29 times for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

As a recruit, 247 Sports had Gatewood as the 49th-ranked recruit in the country and the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback.

Gatewood will have three years of eligibility remaining. Due to NCAA rules surrounding pandemic, this season will not count toward his eligibility.
