Dog Flipping Happening In Central Kentucky

Many central Kentucky families now adopt their pets instead of buying them from a breeder.

Not only does the pet get adopted, but the price is often low.

Now, some people are taking advantage of the cheaper dogs by adopting them and selling them for a higher price on Craigslist.

Mark Hurte, who started No Kill Central Kentucky four years ago, said, "We take a pledge that this is going to be the last place, before getting adopted, that these dogs might have to go."

Hurte said 70,000 animals are placed on Craigslist each year, but it is unclear how many of them are flipped.

While some dogs eventually end up in a good home, Hurte said others have been used for target practice.

To avoid buying from a flipper, Hurte recommended avoiding free dogs on Craigslist that charge a re-homing free.

Dogs that have no vetting history available should also be a red flag.

In the past, Hurte suspected some of their dogs had been flipped, but found proof this week that a dog adopted from his shelter had been sold on Craigslist.

He did not know if the dog was sold at a profit.
