Racial Equality Subcommittee meets to highlight issues in Fayette County

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Mayor Linda Gorton is seeking to dismantle systemic racism in Fayette County. A mission not easily done.

The Racial Equality Subcommittee met for the first time Thursday and has highlighted areas what they see as problems and what they hope to accomplish in Fayette County.

PG Peeples is the Vice-Chair of the subcommittee and a member of the Lexington urban League he had a historical perspective. “What I’ve got in my hands guys is something that was done in 1989 by the Herald Leader called Divided We Stand and I’d be darn if that wasn’t an issue back then it was the same issue back then.”

It’s that same issue that the subcommittee is fighting for today. Many of the ideas were given but everyone agreed they must involve the younger generations. According to Johnnie Johnson with Transylvania University, “We gotta bring our kids in on this we need some students on some of these committees they’re experiencing some things that us 40 50 and 60 year olds aren’t experiencing and so we need some young voices to be involved.”

Education though was the big theme moving forward. At one point one member was sharing a story about the different on where you live could be a difference in your education in Fayette County. Something the subcommittee does plan to look into.

The subcommittee will continue to meet and eventually put together a report for Mayor Linda Gorton for possible improvements in Lexington.
