European Union leaders have reached a major climate change deal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050

BRUSSELS — EU leaders broke a deadlock Thursday and reached a deal over a key climate target, committing to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 after they overcame objections from eastern member states, even though Poland still held out.

A day after the EU’s new commission chief unveiled her “European Green Deal” to fight climate change, heads of state and government approved the goal during a summit in Brussels.

EU Council President Charles Michel said the summit reached ”a deal on this important goal. A French official, who asked not to be named, said Poland still held out but could not stop the deal.
