Scott Co. Schools short on substitute teachers and bus drivers
SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — Many school districts across the country are dealing with a teacher shortage.
In Scott County, it’s a shortage of substitute teachers and bus drivers.
Scott County Schools says those shortages could soon become an issue with winter almost here and more sick days likely being taken.
“We’re getting just over a hundred people that are out in a day that we need to fill,” says Scott County Schools assistant superintendent Billy Parker.
And the district says 188 people served as substitute teachers this school year.
“Of those 188 I know around 15 to 20 have obtained full time employment with the school district. What I don’t know is how many of those 188 have obtained employment somewhere else and aren’t gonna sub for us because they’re not obligated to say ‘Hey, by the way, I’ve got a position now and I’m not coming back’,” says Parker.
Parker says they’re also in a tight spot when it comes to bus drivers. He says they have 67 drivers for 67 routes with only six substitute drivers.
“On really high need days we’ll find that everybody here, everybody in the transportation department, all of are mechanics, are out driving on the roads,” says Parker.
He says a bus driver is considered a full-time position beginning at $15.07 an hour and benefits are included.
