Students resume protests in Indonesia streets over new law

Thousands of Indonesian students have resumed protests against a new law that they say cripples the country’s anti-corruption agency, with some clashing with police.

Clashes between rock-throwing students and riot police broke out Monday evening when protesters attempted to reach parliament in Jakarta after calm had largely returned to the country’s capital in the past four days.

Protesters set fires to tires and pelted police with rocks, gasoline bombs and firecrackers near blocked streets leading to the parliament, where 560 members of the House of Representatives whose terms finish on Monday held their last session. Riot police responded by firing tear gas and water cannons.

There also were protests in other Indonesian cities, including Makassar, the main city on Sulawesi island.
