FCPS begins search for next superintendent, seeks nominations for screening committee
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – The search for Fayette County Public Schools’ next superintendent is officially underway.
FCPS announced Monday that nominations will soon open for the Superintendent Screening Committee, marking the first step in the process to select the district’s next leader.
“The participation and engagement of everyone in our community will play an important role in shaping our district’s next steps,” Fayette County Board of Education Chair Tyler Murphy said in a news release.
The move follows the Fayette County Board of Education’s unanimous declaration of a superintendent vacancy during its Aug. 17 meeting.
Under Kentucky law, a Superintendent Screening Committee must be established within 30 days of a vacancy being declared. The committee will consist of:
- Two teachers or certified employees elected by certified staff
- One classified employee elected by classified staff
- One principal elected by principals
- One parent or guardian elected by parent-teacher organization presidents from each school
- One school board member appointed by the board chair
Nominations for committee members will open at 8 a.m. Aug. 26 and close at noon Sept. 2.
Parents and guardians with children enrolled in FCPS may nominate themselves or another parent or guardian in the district. FCPS employees will also be able to nominate themselves or another employee.
Voting for committee members is scheduled to take place from Sept. 3 through Sept. 9.
District officials say the broader community will also have opportunities to participate in the superintendent search through surveys and listening sessions aimed at identifying the qualities and characteristics residents want to see in the district’s next leader.
“The entire community will have the opportunity to help create a leadership profile that will drive the search and screening process,” Murphy said. “We remain committed to keeping our focus on students, maintaining stability for our district, and ensuring our classrooms continue to foster success and achievement.”
FCPS said additional information about the search process, including opportunities for public input, will be announced as details become available.
