Teen charged with murder, accused of killing man in Scott County shooting

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)- A teenager has been charged with murder in the death of a Scott County man.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 17-year-old who lived in the home where the man was shot now faces charges for murder, wanton endangerment, and being a minor in possession of a firearm.

Sheriff’s deputies cannot release the teenager’s name because he is under 18-years-old.

The Sheriff’s Office says the shooting happened around 10:30 Sunday morning.

When investigators and the coroner got to the house they found a man’s body.

“I feel in my heart like it’s my brother,” Bridgette Lancaster said.

She later learned it was her brother, 47-year-old Michael Ray Smith.

The Sheriff’s Office says there was an argument between the family members and shortly after shots were fired.

Sergeant Eddie Hart confirms there were two adults and five kids in the home at the time.

He also says, about a month ago, deputies responded to a stabbing at the home that involved some of the same people, bbut he says the two incidents are not related.

“Several children present in the home. We’re waiting for the cabinet to respond, they’ll be assisting us and placing those children with other people during this investigation,” Hart said.

“They are pretty much making us wait while they do an investigation,” Lancaster said.

Lancaster says it feels like a nightmare and waiting for answers is making it even harder.

“I’m standing here in the rain and I’m glad it raining because I felt like I was going to pass out, but God gave me some rain just to wake me up and I just wish this nightmare would be over. I wish someone would tell me I’m just having a bad dream,” Lancaster said.

The Sheriff’s Office says Michael Ray Smith’s body has been taken to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Frankfort for an autopsy.
