Garrard Co. Animal Shelter needs help to avoid euthanizing

GARRARD COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — A life or death situation for dogs at the Garrard County Animal Shelter.

The shelter says if dogs aren’t adopted soon it’ll have to start euthanizing.

“Each dog deserves a chance in my book,” says the shelter’s director Brittany Fain.

The shelter is currently under a “code red” situation, meaning it’s at full capacity.

If they don’t get at least five to six dogs moved by Thursday, they’ll be forced to euthanize.

Euthanizing is the last thing Fain wants to do. She says she’s been able to keep it that way since 2016.

“Each dog has their own quirks. Some dogs don’t like cats, some don’t like other dogs but that shouldn’t be a reason that they should lose their life,” says Fain.

She says the shelter’s taken in 17 dogs in less than a week and they’ve been working around the clock.

“My main focus is to make sure these guys find a home and I don’t have to do the unthinkable. It breaks my heart, it really does,” says Fain.

She says every dog has been sponsored meaning their adoption fee, vetting, and fixing is covered.

She says the overcrowding boils down to one recurring issue: spaying and neutering.

“If everybody would make sure their animals are spayed and neutered, we wouldn’t be here. Maxie didn’t really ask to be born and dropped somewhere and not have a family,” says Fain.

Adoptions are the number one priority right now but if you can’t help there, they have an Amazon Wishlist of supplies needed.

Adoption appointments can be made anytime, even outside of shelter hours, Fain says.
