Books Barbers and Ballers First Annual Back to School Bash
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The purpose of the event was to provide free backpacks full of school supplies to help out kids in need and they offered free hair cuts.
At the beginning of the event they had over 200 backpacks and by the end, there were only 34 left.
There is a lot that goes into preparing for the first day of school, the Back to School Bash wanted to help parents and kids feel ready.
Barber Larry Mashni said, “I got three kids at the house and you have to have a haircut before you go to school. first day that is the biggest thing. First impressions mean everything.”
The event’s founder says having a positive role model can make a big difference.
Kids at the event had a chance to talk to Adam “Pacman” Jones, some UK football players and even Miss Kentucky.
Founder of Books Barbells and Ballers Simon Vanderpool said, “Yeah we really provided for the kids that were in need of some of the supplies but obviously one of our goals too today was just to show them the importance of education and connect some of these athletes and like Miss Kentucky and all that to just being in school and how important it is.”
Tishana and Adam Jones have just released their new book ActionPac in hopes to inspire young kids.
They spent the last two years working with Marvel and Dreamworks writers to create it.
Tishana Holmes-Jones said, “We wanted it to really get the kids involved, to speak on things that are going on in today’s society but something that they could relate to. So why not incorporate ActionpPac with it?”
The book focuses on what’s going on in society today, what Pacman has gone through in life, bullying and much more.
Pacman said they are trying to get the kids to do something good for someone else.
