Spain government: Socialists open to coalition with far left

The spokeswoman for Spain’s caretaker government says acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is willing to go into a coalition with the far-left United We Can party, so long as its leader, Pablo Iglesias, does not have a seat at the Cabinet table.

Spokeswoman Isabel Celaá said Friday that “the offer of a coalition government is on the table” for United We Can to consider before next week’s confidence votes.

She blamed the deadlock in negotiations between Sánchez’s Socialist Party and United We Can on Iglesias’ alleged aspiration to be in Cabinet.

Sánchez needs the support of United We Can and other parties to receive the endorsement of Spain’s Parliament to form a new government.

The first investiture vote is on Tuesday, followed by a second opportunity Thursday.
