Deadly DUI crash suspect in court today

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — A woman accused of a DUI crash in Lexington faced a judge Monday.

That crash ended up killing a 10-year-old girl.

It was hard for family friends to watch as 24-year-old Sequoyah Collins pleaded not guilty.

She’s out of jail and the judge took away her license.

We told you about the crash Friday. Collins is accused of speeding through a red light and crashing into a car carrying two adults and four kids.

Her arrest citation says she was visibly impaired, but refused to take a breathalyzer or blood test.

One kid died in the crash, 10-year-old Alexia Gomez Hernandez.

“Alexia was so kind to everybody and would make everybody happy even when they were having bad days,” says family friend and co-worker of Alexia’s mom, Ally Adkins.

Two other kids are still in the hospital in critical condition, according to GoFundMe pages set up for them.

Ally Adkins and Destiny Martinez were there in court to support Alexia’s mom.

They also organized the fundraiser for her.

“To help her out with rent and any expenses she needs, medical bills. No one should ever have to go through this and we just want for her to not worry about anything for awhile,” says Destiny Martinez.

The fundraiser surpassed it’s goal of $10,000 in just two days.

“We’re all working to be strong for Maricruz and Alexia and just the support we’ve had from the community is just outstanding,” says Adkins.

Both work with Maricruz and know her two kids.

They say Alexia’s brother was also in the wreck.

He wasn’t hurt but they say he isn’t doing well without his sister.

“Him asking ya know ‘Where’s my sister?’ it breaks my heart so much that his sister won’t come home and we don’t get to see her anymore<‘ says Martinez. “It just hurts so much.”
