Making of ‘The Stand-in’ part 3
Part 3:
Doug High: Hey, guys. Welcome back. Doug High with you at Wrigley Media Group production studios, here in Lexington, and for now, the home of an amazing Drew Barrymore film that’s come to Lexington and central Kentucky. Folks are so excited about this. Not only A-list power on camera, but behind the camera we’ve got some incredible talent too, including this gentleman, my goodness. He’s the producer of the film, Tom McNulty. Tom, appreciate your time here.
Tom McNulty: Thanks for having me, thanks.
Doug High: Just give me a quick hit of the resume here. I mean, you’ve been involved in some amazing pictures.
Tom McNulty: Sure. I’ve produced films like Date Night, and Night at the Museum, and a bunch of comedies for Adam Sandler back in the day, and now I am working with the great Jamie Babbitt, our director, and Drew Barrymore again on this film, The Stand IN.
Doug High: Okay. You’ve got some Drew Barrymore time here.
Tom McNulty: Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Doug High: Give us a behind the scenes look. What is she like to work with?
Tom McNulty: I mean, honestly, she’s a consummate professional. I mean, this is a really tricky role for her. She’s playing two characters in the same film and they’re very, very different characters. She’s been doing this since she was two years old. She’s been an Hollywood legend forever.
Doug High: We’ve watched her grow up.
Tom McNulty: She’s a Barrymore, so she’s a part of Hollywood … you know, she’s part of a Hollywood history that far predates me, working with her has been an absolute dream. Crews love her. I can’t say enough about her. I’ve made another film with her, my wife made a film with her and working with her again is a real treat.
Doug High: We’re thrilled to have you all here in Lexington.
Tom McNulty: Yeah.
Doug High: You did some scouting.
Tom McNulty: We did.
Doug High: A few months back.
Tom McNulty: Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Doug High: Give me your impressions of our little horse town here.
Tom McNulty: Well, actually it’s not a little horse town. I mean, actually, it’s far bigger.
Doug High: Not anymore.
Tom McNulty: It’s a far bigger town than I thought it was going to be. I’ve been to Louisville a couple of times, never Lexington and Louisville obviously, everyone knows that because of the Kentucky Derby, but really Lexington is where the horse country really kind of lives and breathes. Which I didn’t realize before I came here. I had some bourbon, which you guys are the epicenter of that, no complaints there either. Far more choices than I have back in Los Angeles.
The architecture here is beautiful. The topography, the rolling hills, I mean you are the Bluegrass State. It’s absolutely beautiful and you can’t get looks like this anywhere else in the country. When we were devising our film, and figuring out where to shoot it, enter Wrigley Media Group, who totally coincidental, Jamie’s brother Ross runs the entertainment division of the group and she said, ‘call my brother.’ I thought this is never going to happen, this is never going to work. There is no flipping away, we’re going to fly ourselves down to Kentucky to shoot the end of the movie. I talked to him on the phone and the woman who runs the company, Misdee Wrigley who owns the company, was very gracious and she really wants to put a strong footprint of entertainment and television and media and film here in Lexington and they made us, as they say in Hollywood, an offer we couldn’t refuse.
Doug High: Ah.
Tom McNulty: Biggest thing, I think Jamie talked about this as well, was, is the tax incentive. This is really a world class entertainment operation here and I know it’s only going to get bigger and I know that they really want to embrace Hollywood and bring more world class productions here.
Doug High: Well Tom, we appreciate you putting so much faith and trust into Kentucky …
Tom McNulty: Sure.
Doug High: … for part of your film and we’re looking forward to seeing you all work and work with Lexington over the next couple days.
Tom McNulty: Yeah. We’re real excited.
Doug High: We’re glad you’re here.
Tom McNulty: Thanks so much.
Doug High: Good to meet you.
Tom McNulty: Thanks, okay. Take care.
Doug High: We’re back in just a second folks. You’re watching Good Day.
