Berea man sentenced to prison after pointing gun at officers during domestic call

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced that a Berea man has been sentenced to prison after pointing a weapon at officers during a domestic disturbance call.

According to officials, Daniel Lewis, 56, was sentenced in Madison County Circuit Court to five years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer.

Authorities say the incident happened in July 2023, when officers with the Berea Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance.

Police say Lewis was actively firing a weapon from the back deck of his home and ignored repeated commands to put the weapon down.

Officials say officers ultimately incapacitated Lewis with a nonfatal gunshot before taking him into custody.

“This is policing at its finest,” Coleman said. “On behalf of all Kentuckians, I commend these Berea officers whose willingness to put themselves at risk deescalated the threat and preserved life.”

The case was investigated by Kentucky State Police and prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Lindsey Studebaker.
