The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns of burn risk from more than 40,000 Gourmia pressure cookers

(ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning for more than 40,000 pressure cookers due to a burn risk.

The warning involves Gourmia six-quart pressure cookers sold between 2017 and 2020 at Best Buy, other retailers and online.

The agency says the lid can open while the cooker is still pressurized, causing hot contents to spray out and potentially result in severe second-degree burns.

According to the commission, there have been five reports of customers being burned, four of them severely. The issue has also prompted at least two lawsuits.

The warning notes the float valve on the cooker is difficult to see, which could lead users to open the lid while the unit is still under pressure.

In addition, incorrect volume markings on the inner pot could cause users to overfill it. That may result in hot food and liquids being ejected when the cooker is vented or pressurized.

Consumers are urged to stop using the pressure cookers immediately and dispose of them. Officials say owners should not sell or give the product away.
