Legislation to require DNA collection for felony suspects moves forward

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A bill that would require DNA collection from people arrested on felony charges is moving forward in the Kentucky legislature.

House Bill 414 cleared the House Government Committee with a unanimous vote, sending the proposal to the House floor for further consideration.

Lawmakers say the legislation would require jails to collect a DNA sample when a suspect is arrested and booked on a felony charge. Supporters argue the measure could help law enforcement solve crimes more quickly and strengthen investigations.

According to the bill’s sponsor, the proposal also includes safeguards for people who are not convicted of a felony. Under the legislation, DNA samples would have to be expunged if a suspect is acquitted, if charges are dismissed, or if the case results in a conviction on a non-felony offense.

Lawmakers backing the measure say more than 30 other states already have similar laws in place.

The bill now heads to the full House for consideration.
