Lexington honors Lt. Brenda Cowan 22 years after line-of-duty death

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The city of Lexington is remembering Lt. Brenda Cowan, the city’s first Black female firefighter, 22 years after she was killed in the line of duty.

Cowan died on Feb. 13, 2004, during her first tour of duty after being promoted to lieutenant. Officials say she was responding to a domestic violence call in south Lexington when she was shot and killed.

City leaders and educators say her legacy continues to shape the community today. In 2019, Fayette County Public Schools honored her life and service by opening Brenda Cowan Elementary School, which carries her name.

A legacy remembered through service

This week, the school marked “Brenda Cowan Week of Service,” culminating in Friday’s “Brenda Cowan Legacy Day.” According to the school, the events are designed to reflect Cowan’s commitment to helping others and serving the community.

Educators say students learn about Cowan’s dedication and leadership through service projects and programs that highlight her impact on Lexington.

City officials say Cowan’s story remains an important reminder of the sacrifices made by first responders — and the lasting influence one person’s service can have on future generations.  description:
