Senator McConnell discharged from hospital

WASHINGTON (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell is out of the hospital and recovering at home after being admitted last week with what aides described as flu-like symptoms.

A spokesperson for the Kentucky Republican says the 83-year-old was discharged Tuesday and is feeling better. McConnell is expected to continue working remotely while he recovers.

Because of his recovery, the senator is not expected to attend votes on Capitol Hill this week.

His absence comes as the U.S. Senate faces a deadline to fund the Department of Homeland Security before funding is set to run out Friday, raising the possibility of a funding lapse if lawmakers cannot reach an agreement.

McConnell has experienced several recent health-related absences, though his office says he plans to remain active in his duties while recovering.
