Heavy fire damages home on American Avenue as crews shift to defensive operations

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Fire crews are continuing to work an active house fire on American Avenue in Lexington, where heavy flames forced firefighters to pull back for safety.

According to the Lexington Fire Department, crews were sent to a home on American Ave. at 1:32 p.m. and arrived just three minutes later.

Battalion Chief Derek Roberts says firefighters were met with heavy, advanced fire conditions when they got on scene.

Crews initially attempted an interior attack, but Roberts says the fire had already caused significant damage to the structure. As conditions inside continued to deteriorate, firefighters made the decision to switch to defensive operations to protect their safety and nearby properties.

At this point, the fire is still considered an active scene. Officials say no injuries have been reported, however, two adults are displaced because of the fire.

American Avenue remains closed as crews continue working, and drivers are being asked to avoid the area while the response continues.
