Eagle found at state park with gunshot wound later euthanized

RUSSELL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Officials in Russell County say a bald eagle rescued earlier this week at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park will have to be humanely euthanized after veterinarians discovered the bird had been shot.

Crews spotted the injured eagle along a roadway inside the park on Monday and moved quickly to get it help. After being examined by veterinarians, officials learned the eagle’s wing had suffered severe gunshot injuries — damage so extensive the bird could not recover.

Park officials say shooting a bald eagle is a federal crime and can carry serious penalties, including jail time and fines of up to $100,000. They also stressed that hunting and firing weapons inside the park is strictly prohibited.

The incident is now being investigated, and anyone who may have information is urged to contact the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.
