Plea deal offered in autistic student dragging case
GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) -According to the Daily Independent, prosecutors have offered a plea bargain to the former teacher accused of dragging an autistic boy through a school hallway in an incident that received national media attention.
The former teacher, 59-year-old Trina Abrams, appeared in Greenup District Court for a pretrial conference Wednesday with her attorney, Matthew Wisecup.
Abrams is charged with fourth-degree assault, which is a misdemeanor. She pleaded not guilty to the charge in January.
Abrams is accused of dragging a 9-year-old autistic boy by his wrists through the halls of Wurtland Elementary School, where the boy was a student.
A school surveillance video shows the boy being dragged through multiple halls and has been aired repeatedly by national media outlets.
School officials said in January they removed Abrams from the school, contacted the boy’s mother and notified police and Child Protective Services.
The newspaper says Wisecup asked Judge Brian McCloud for time to review what he described as a plea agreement offer. McCloud scheduled another conference for May 8.
School officials said in January they removed Abrams from the school, contacted the boy’s mother and notified police and Child Protective Services.
Abrams, who was the school’s resource teacher, no longer works for the Greenup County school district. She remains free on condition she not teach or work in a school.
The boy now attends a different school in the district and is recovering but requires therapy, his mother said in January.
