Kentucky winter storm death toll rises to 12 after Fayette County woman dies from hypothermia
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The death toll from last weekend’s powerful winter storm has now climbed to 12 across Kentucky, with the Fayette County Coroner’s Office confirming a Lexington woman died from hypothermia caused by extreme cold.
The coroner’s office says 32-year-old Jordyn Daws of Lexington was found in the front yard of a home on Wargrave Walk just after 12:45 p.m. Wednesday. Her death was ruled accidental, caused by hypothermia due to environmental exposure.
Her death becomes the latest storm-related fatality as dangerous cold and power outages continue impacting communities across the commonwealth.
Earlier this week, Governor Andy Beshear announced an additional storm-related death involving a 55-year-old man from Livingston County, bringing the statewide total to 11 before the Fayette County confirmation.
The number also includes a deadly case in Pulaski County, where the county coroner confirmed 62-year-old James L. Phillips was found dead inside his camper trailer in the Bend of the Lakes Shore area Tuesday morning. Pulaski County Coroner Clyde Strunk said Phillips lost power during the storm. Officials reported it was just 9 degrees inside the trailer when he was found.
Governor Beshear has said families of all storm victims will receive assistance through the Team Kentucky Emergency Relief Fund to help cover funeral expenses.
State officials continue urging residents to remain cautious as recovery efforts continue, noting that lingering ice, bitter cold temperatures and power issues can still pose serious risks.
