Lexington Fire Department warns public to stay off frozen ponds and creeks

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Lexington Fire Department is warning residents to stay off frozen ponds, lakes and creeks as cold temperatures move through the area.

Officials say while freezing weather may cause ice to form on bodies of water, the ice can break without warning and may not be strong enough to support a person’s weight.

Fire officials advise against walking, skating or playing on ice due to several hazards, including uneven and unpredictable ice thickness, weakened ice caused by moving water and runoff beneath the surface, and the risk of cold water shock.

Officials say cold water shock can be deadly within seconds.

If someone falls through ice, officials urge the public to call 911 immediately and warn against going onto the ice in an attempt to help.

Emergency crews say it is safer to wait for trained responders with proper equipment to handle ice rescues.
