Governor confirms hypothermia death in Whitley County as extreme cold grips Kentucky
WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Governor Andy Beshear confirmed Monday that a woman has died in Whitley County as dangerous cold temperatures continue across the commonwealth.
In a post on social media, Beshear said the victim was a 72-year-old woman whose death was linked to hypothermia.
“Kentucky, I’ve got some sad news to share,” Beshear wrote. “We’ve confirmed one fatality in Whitley County with the passing of a 72-year-old woman due to hypothermia. Please join me in praying for her family during this difficult time.”
State officials continue urging residents to take winter weather seriously, stay indoors when possible, use warming shelters if power is out, and check on neighbors — especially seniors and those without reliable heat.
Emergency crews across Kentucky remain active responding to storm-related issues as freezing temperatures persist.
