City of Frankfort prepares for major winter storm as snow, ice move in this weekend
FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — City leaders in Frankfort are asking residents to prepare now as a major winter storm is expected to impact the area beginning early Saturday.
According to the City of Frankfort, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Frankfort and Franklin County starting at 1 a.m. Saturday and lasting through early Monday. Forecasts call for 12 to 15 inches of snow, along with the potential for sleet and ice, according to a release.
City Public Works crews say they are ready to respond, with trucks prepped to begin salting and clearing roads once snowfall begins. Emergency management and public safety officials will also be on standby throughout the weekend to respond to any issues that arise.
Some city services will be affected. Frankfort Transit will suspend routes on Saturday, and sanitation crews will assist with snow removal instead of running trash routes. Any changes to curbside collection early next week will be announced Monday.
Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads if possible and prepare for several days of winter weather. Officials recommend having emergency supplies on hand, charging electronic devices, bringing pets indoors, and checking on neighbors who may need help.
To help keep streets clear, the city is offering free parking all weekend in both downtown parking garages, located at 200 Ann Street and 510 Clinton Street.
Warming centers are also available across the community for anyone needing a warm place during the storm. Residents can get the latest updates by following the City of Frankfort and Ready Frankfort on social media or signing up for alerts through the city’s website by clicking HERE.
