Trooper, Sheriff’s Deputies Shot In Breathitt County
It happened Sunday at 8:10 p.m. on Highway 30 West in the Canoe community. State police said two people called dispatch to report that someone shot at them from a home while they were traveling down the road.
Brenda Southwood and Larry Adams were struck but did not suffer life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Troopers and Breathitt County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, where they were fired upon. State police said Trooper Joey King was hit in the face with buckshot and two Breathitt County Sheriff’s deputies were also struck.
Their wounds were not life-threatening. The officers on the scene returned fire when the gunman, identifed as Danny R. Johnson, 59, of Houston Kentucky refused to stop firing on them. He was found on the porch suffering from a gunshot wound and was taken to Kentucky River Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
State Police continue to investigate.
