Muhammad Ali commemorative stamp unveiled in Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Postal officials in Louisville have unveiled a new commemorative stamp honoring boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
According to ABC affiliate WHAS 11, the U.S. Postal Service printed 22 million of the stamps, which feature an Associated Press photograph from 1974 showing Ali holding up his gloves in a fighting stance. His last name appears in bold black and red all-cap lettering on the stamp.
The stamp officially went on sale today.
The Forever stamp is part of a commemorative sheet that also includes a separate image of Ali posing in a pinstripe suit, recognizing his work beyond the ring as an activist and humanitarian.
Born Cassius Clay Jr., Ali changed his name after converting to Islam. He died in 2016 at the age of 74 after living with Parkinson’s disease for more than three decades. Ali is buried in Louisville.
