Lexington community mourns the loss of longtime photographer Woody Phillips

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – We’re sharing some very sad news with the Lexington community.

Well-known photographer Woody Phillips has passed away after facing ongoing health challenges over the past several months. His family shared that he died early Thursday morning.

For many in Lexington, Woody was more than a photographer — he was part of the community itself. Whether he was behind the camera at a fundraiser, a school event, or a local gathering, he had a way of making people feel at ease. He didn’t just capture moments; he brought warmth, laughter, and a genuine kindness that stayed with you long after the photos were taken.

Those who worked alongside him often say everyone has a “Woody story.” He was widely known as the TOPS photographer people specifically asked for, not just because of his talent, but because of the joy and heart he brought to every event. Many also remember seeing him working with his grandson by his side, sharing his love for photography and for people.

As the community reflects on his life, there’s deep sadness — but also gratitude. Gratitude for the memories he preserved, the friendships he built, and the lasting impact he made through his work and his spirit.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Nancy, his grandson, Parker, and the entire Phillips family. Information about arrangements will be shared when it becomes available.
