London City Police appoint Gary Mehler as acting chief of police

LONDON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The London City Police Department has announced the appointment of Gary Mehler as acting chief of police, effective January 8, 2026.

According to the department, Mehler brings more than 40 years of law enforcement experience to the role, with a background that includes team management, crisis response, and operational oversight. Officials say his career reflects a long-standing commitment to public service, leadership, and professionalism.

Mehler has served in a variety of law enforcement roles throughout his career, including with the United States Air Force, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, and the London Police Department. The department says his experience at the federal, military, county, and municipal levels provides a strong foundation for leading the agency.

He also holds several professional certifications, including certified accident reconstructionist, certified police training officer, and certified K-9 handler.

Mehler’s service has been recognized with numerous awards, including National Supervisor of the Year with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Supervisor of the Year in 2023 with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, and three meritorious service awards during his time there. While serving with the London Police Department, he has also received a meritorious service award and the chief’s commendation.

The London City Police Department says it is confident Mehler’s leadership and community-focused approach will continue to strengthen the department and enhance public safety for the city of London.
