Floyd County reports three new cases of whooping cough

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The Floyd County Health Department is reporting three new cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in Eastern Kentucky.

According to the health department, the total number of confirmed pertussis cases has now risen to 17.

Health officials say pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause severe coughing fits and is especially dangerous for infants and young children.

Officials stress that vaccination is the most effective way to protect against whooping cough and help prevent the spread of the disease in the community.

The health department encourages residents to stay up to date on recommended vaccinations and to contact their health care provider if they experience symptoms.
