Board votes in support of Superintendent’s recommendations

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Fayette County Public Schools leaders have voted on the future of the STABLES program at the Kentucky Horse Park and the district’s STEM academies.

According to the district, the Fayette County school board voted Tuesday night to support Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins’ recommendation to keep the STABLES program open for at least another year.

Under Liggins’ proposal, the district would work to identify alternative funding sources for the STABLES program or move to close the program after the 2026–27 school year if funding cannot be secured.

The board also voted to support Liggins’ recommendations regarding the George Washington Carver STEM Academy for Boys and the Rise STEM Academy for Girls.

Those recommendations include moving forward with the planned Versailles Road building for the girls’ academy and pausing improvement plans at the former Johnson Elementary School, which currently houses the boys’ academy.

Liggins also recommended the district explore a possible new location for the Carver academy and temporarily relocate it next fall to the Rise building, while keeping the boys’ and girls’ programs separate.

More information about the school board’s votes is available on the Fayette County Public Schools website.
