Stanford Indigenous Peoples Day
On September 19th, 2017 Stanford passed the first Indigenous Peoples Day Proclamation in the history of Kentucky. It is a document prepared by a specific town which proclaims their intent to promote and celebrate Native American history and culture, usually on Columbus Day. As a result of that first signing, Stanford hosted its first Indigenous Peoples Day celebration last year. This is the 2nd Annual event which will be held at the courthouse on historic Main Street in Stanford. This event will provide Native American music and speakers and we are also proud to announce we will be hosting 3 time Grammy winner, Bill Miller, a guitarist, vocalist, and flute player of Mohican heritage. A reception will follow in the courthouse. This entire event is family friendly and free to the public!
Additionally it has been my job to canvass the state this year and speak with mayors, city councils, and other officials in an effort to pass proclamations in as many cities as possible. As of September, there has been 23 Indigenous Peoples Day proclamations in 23 cities this year, considerably more than any other state in any given year since the movement began in 1992 in Berkeley, California. So Kentucky history has been made.
