Coroner identifies driver killed after runaway tire hits van on I75

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A driver who was killed Thursday night when police say a tire flew off a semi-truck and struck his van has been identified.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office says 58-year-old Raleigh Downey died of multiple blunt force trauma.

According to Lexington Police, Downey was driving southbound on Interstate 75 near exit 113 around 11:30 p.m. Thursday when a tire came off a semi-truck traveling northbound, flew across the median and hit his van.

Police say the driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Southbound I-75 was shut down for several hours while the Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated.
