AAA warns drivers to use caution as wintry mix moves into Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – With a wintry mix expected to move into parts of Central and Northern Kentucky Monday night into Tuesday, AAA is urging drivers to use extra caution on the roads.

In an advisory Monday, AAA Blue Grass said the combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain could create slick conditions for the Tuesday morning commute. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the region, noting that precipitation types may vary significantly across the state.

According to the advisory, accumulating snow is more likely north of the Bluegrass Parkway, while areas south could see sleet and freezing rain before a possible changeover to snow.

Lori Weaver Hawkins, public and government affairs manager for AAA Blue Grass, said the biggest concern is how quickly roads may become hazardous.

“It doesn’t take much winter precipitation to slicken road surfaces, quickly resulting in hazardous driving conditions that often catch drivers off-guard,” Weaver Hawkins said. “Slow down, leave more room between you and the vehicle ahead of you, and avoid sudden maneuvers.”

AAA says hazardous winter weather contributes to roughly 1.6 million crashes and more than 8,000 traffic deaths each year, based on research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

AAA’s winter driving reminders

AAA recommends the following safety steps as wintry weather moves in:

  • Slow down and leave at least three times more distance than usual between vehicles.

  • Watch traffic ahead and react early to brake lights or hazards.

  • Avoid cruise control on slippery roads.

  • Limit lane changes, which can increase the chance of losing traction.

  • Get momentum before hills, and avoid powering up snowy inclines.

  • Brake early on clear pavement before icy intersections.

  • If you skid, ease off the accelerator and steer in the direction you want to go.

  • Do not brake and turn at the same time.

  • Know your brakes — expect vibration when ABS activates.

  • Stay distraction-free.

Weaver Hawkins also warned that even wet-looking pavement can hide icy patches when temperatures hover near freezing.

Clear your vehicle and prepare a winter emergency kit

AAA advises drivers to fully clear their windshield, mirrors, windows, lights and — during snow events — the roof and hood before hitting the road.

Motorists are also encouraged to prepare a winter emergency kit, which AAA says should include items such as:

  • ice scraper, de-icer and folding shovel

  • flashlight and extra batteries

  • jumper cables

  • warm clothing and blankets

  • flares or reflective triangles

  • water and non-perishable food

  • a phone charger

  • first-aid kit

  • traction aids like sand or cat litter

AAA says its roadside assistance crews are prepared to respond if the wintry mix leads to an increase in emergency calls.

“Stay weather-aware,” Weaver Hawkins said. “If roads become hazardous, stay home if possible. Less traffic reduces crash risk for everyone.”
