Thanksgiving travel expected to surge as more than a million Kentuckians hit the road

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – With Thanksgiving just a week away, travel officials say millions of Americans — including more than a million Kentuckians — are preparing to hit the road for what’s expected to be one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Travel numbers in Kentucky are expected to be higher than normal this season. “It’s going to be a busy Thanksgiving holiday for travelers. We expect just over 1 million Kentuckiens to travel during the Thanksgiving holiday period between Tuesday Nov 25th and Monday December 1 with 96% of them will be traveling by vehicles,” said Lori Weaver-Hawkins with AAA.

Air travel is also expected to rebound as federal government operations return to normal and more airport staff resume work. AAA recommends travelers arrive at least two hours before their flights and remain aware of their surroundings.

“Keep your carry-on within your sight, and just be aware of your surroundings, there are gonna be big crowds at a lot of these airports,” Weaver-Hawkins said.

For the many Kentuckians choosing to drive this year, AAA urges travelers to make sure their vehicles are ready for long-distance travel.

“If you are one of the 96% of travelers in Kentucky who are planning a road trip be sure that your vehicle is up to the task, make sure the battery of your vehicle is 3 years old or older have that checked by a professional battery technician before you head out to make sure it’s up to the task and check those tires make sure you have proper pressure in each of the 4 tires and make sure there’s adequate tread,” Weaver-Hawkins said.

AAA says gas prices are expected to remain steady, offering a bit of relief for holiday travelers.

“Good news for those traveling, we are not expecting gas prices to really jump up ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday so all those people who are taking a road trip can get a little gift at the pump,” Weaver-Hawkins said.

As millions prepare for holiday travel, Weaver-Hawkins reminded Kentuckians to buckle up, avoid distractions, never drink and drive, and stay patient through the crowds.

“I say this all the time every time we talk about these holidays are so popular to travel, pack your patience because they’re gonna be a lot of people out there,” she said.
