Big Blue Crush underway this week at all Kentucky Blood Center locations

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The 38th annual Big Blue Crush blood drive is officially underway at all Kentucky Blood Center locations, according to a release from KBC.

The release says the yearly competition between KBC and Tennessee’s MEDIC Regional Blood Center is designed to help maintain a strong blood supply heading into Thanksgiving week. All KBC donor centers and mobile drives are participating through Friday, with most centers open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Louisville locations began participating Tuesday.

According to the release, mobile donor sites are also available throughout the week, including locations on the University of Kentucky campus. A full list of mobile drives can be found by clicking HERE.

KBC says donors can schedule an appointment using the link above, by clicking this link, kybloodcenter.org, or by calling 800-775-2522. Walk-ins are accepted as space allows, though the release notes that appointments are highly encouraged due to high demand during Big Blue Crush.

The release also highlights Kentucky’s strong history in the competition. KBC has won three straight years, 13 of the last 15 matchups, and leads the overall series 22–14–1 since the event began in 1988.

According to KBC, blood donors must be in general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and present a photo I.D. Donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with parental consent. Permission slips for 16-year-old donors are available at kybloodcenter.org.
