Experts share steps Kentucky families can take as SNAP benefits end
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – With SNAP benefits ending, many Kentucky families are searching for ways to manage food and resources effectively. Experts are offering several key steps to help households navigate the transition.
According to officials, families should first check their EBT cards for any remaining funds. If there’s a leftover balance, that money will remain available even after the benefits pause begins, providing short-term support until funding resumes.
Experts also recommend reaching out to local food banks and pantries, many of which have stocked up in preparation for increased demand. These organizations can provide free meals and grocery support for families in need.
Governor Andy Beshear announced Thursday that the state is allocating new funding to help fill the gap — $9.1 million for senior meal programs and more than $12 million for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.
“We found $9.1 million dollars to help with senior meals that are going to help during this time,” Beshear said. “We made plans to use over $12 million dollars to help the TANF program that serve a lot of these struggling families to prevent a double hit.”
In addition to state assistance, experts encourage families to contact local nonprofits, develop a food budget that prioritizes essential items, and stay informed on the latest updates to plan ahead.
