Kentuckians urged to prepare as federal SNAP benefits could be paused November 1
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – With federal funding in question, millions of Americans—including thousands here in Central and Eastern Kentucky—could see a temporary halt to their monthly SNAP food benefits starting November 1.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has warned that SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) payments may be delayed or paused entirely if Congress fails to pass a spending bill before the new month begins. That uncertainty is putting pressure on families who rely on the program to put food on the table.
Local food banks and nonprofits are already preparing for a possible surge in demand. God’s Pantry Food Bank, which serves more than 50 counties across Central and Eastern Kentucky, says it’s bracing for higher traffic in the coming weeks and is encouraging anyone in need to reach out early.
What you can do now
Kentucky’s Department for Community Based Services says residents who receive SNAP should:
- Check their EBT balance now and conserve unused benefits already loaded onto cards.
- Submit or renew SNAP paperwork as soon as possible to avoid delays once funding resumes.
- Use community resources like food pantries, church meal programs, and neighborhood assistance groups if benefits are disrupted.
Nutrition advocates say it’s also smart to plan a budget-friendly grocery list that stretches meals for several weeks and to avoid stockpiling, which could strain supply for others.
Local help available
In Lexington, God’s Pantry, Catholic Action Center, and Community Action Council are all offering food support and emergency assistance.
Viewers outside Fayette County can find local pantries through Feeding America Kentucky’s Heartland (click HERE) and Kentucky Association of Food Banks (click HERE).
Those who want to help can donate shelf-stable goods, volunteer at local distribution sites, or contribute funds to their nearest food pantry.
What happens next
If lawmakers reach a funding deal, benefits are expected to continue as normal. If not, the USDA has indicated that no new benefits will be issued beginning November 1.
The situation remains fluid, and ABC36 NEWS NOW will continue to monitor federal updates and share new information from the state on line and on air.
