Senator Mitch McConnell falls in Capitol’s basement

WASHINGTON (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell slipped and fell Thursday in the basement hallway of the U.S. Capitol while walking toward the Senate floor, according to officials.

Lawmakers say McConnell, 83, was walking with his security detail when a protester approached him. He briefly released his grip and stumbled to the ground before being helped up by a Capitol Police officer and aides.

After the fall, McConnell resumed walking and participated in the Senate votes. It was not immediately clear whether he sustained any injuries.

McConnell has had previous incidents in recent years, including earlier falls and health concerns, which have drawn public scrutiny.

He remains in office, and he plans to retire in January 2027.
