Former Louisville officer Brett Hankison reports to prison for role in Breonna Taylor raid
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A former Louisville Metro Police detective convicted in connection with the deadly Breonna Taylor raid is now behind bars.
According to ABC affiliate WHAS 11, Brett Hankison reported Thursday to Fort Dix Federal Prison in New Jersey to begin serving his 33-month sentence.
A federal jury found Hankison guilty last November of using excessive force after firing ten shots into Taylor’s apartment during the 2020 raid. None of those bullets struck Taylor, but some entered a neighboring apartment, narrowly missing residents.
Hankison had requested additional time before reporting to prison, but a federal judge denied his motion earlier this week. After completing his sentence, he will serve three years of supervised release.
Hankison was acquitted on state charges in 2022, and his first federal trial ended in a mistrial in 2023 before the most recent conviction.
